This article is first among the series of Tagalog Root Words. If your concern is to widen your vocabulary in Tagalog language, start off with root words. A huge percentage of the whole Tagalog vocabulary are words with root words embedded inside them. Collecting most of the root words is like collecting seeds that are about to be planted and to be cultivated in your fertile mind. The seed can grow naturally producing many branches and then fruits later on.  Likewise, the root word can grow in numbers resulting to many derived words.

Tagalog Word Yarì

In this issue, it's about the root word yarì. Let's begin by taking into consideration the following two known definitions:

  1. It refers to how the thing is made including the details in making it.
  2. It pertains to place, materials, or tools in making the products.

In Tagalog...

  1. Paraan o katangian ng paggawâ o pagtapos.
  2. Pook, materyales, o kasangkapan sa pagkagawa ng isang produkto.

The following words are derived from the root word yarì:

  • Pangyayari: a noun which means event, occurrence, or incident;
  • Mangyari: an infinitive mood of verb which means "to happen"; the following are indicative moods completed, uncompleted and contemplative, respectively: nangyari, nangyayari, and mangyayari;
  • Mayarì: an infinitive mood of verb which means "to make things happen either intentionally or unintentionally"; its indicative moods completed, uncompleted and contemplative, respectively are: nayarì, nayayarì, and mayayarì;
  • Makayarí: an infinitive mood of verb which means "ability to finish or get things done"; its indicative moods completed, uncompleted and contemplative, respectively are: nakayarì, nakayayarì, and makayayarì; and
  • Yariin: an infinitive mood of verb which means "to finish something" with the indicative moods niyarì (completed), niyayarì (uncompleted) and yayariin (contemplative).

Here are sample sentences where abovementioned words are used:

  1. Ang tuláy na itó ay yarì sa bakal. Ang tuláy na iyán ay yarí sa kahoy. Nakakita ka na ba ng tuláy na yarì sa semento?
  2. Hindî muna akó uuwî para mayarì na itóng report na sinusulat ko ngayón.
  3. Yariin mo na ang pagkukumpuní ng tubo ng lababo natin.
  4. Ikuwento mo sa akin kung anó ang nangyari sa laban ni Manny Paquiao.
  5. Mag-ingat sa mga mandurukot. Mangyari po lamang na bantayán ang inyóng mga dala-dalahan.
  6. Gustó kong subaybayán ang mga pangyayari sa Spratly Islands.

Basic Tagalog

If you're a beginner in Tagalog, include the following words in your vocabulary list:

  • Tuláy (noun): bridge
  • Bakal (noun): steel
  • Kahoy (noun): wood
  • Semento (noun): cement
  • Tubo (noun): tube
  • Lababo (noun): sink
  • Laban (noun): fight

Here are a few phrases to remember if you wish to start speaking in Tagalog:

  • Yarì sa bakal (made of steel)
  • Yarì sa kahoy (made of wood)
  • Yarì sa semento (made of cement)
  • Nakakita ka na ba ng /noun/? (Have you seen /something/?)
  • Hindî muna akó uuwì. (I won't go home at the moment.)
  • Ikuwento mo sa akin. (Tell me what happened.)
  • Gustó kong subaybayán ang /noun/. (I'd like to follow the /something/.)
